Tips to Make Dentist Visits Easier for Children
Be Positive:
Act positive in front of your children whenever you talk about the dentist. Children can easily pick up on your feelings, and if you are negative, it can influence the way they feel about the dentist.
Explain what they can expect:
Before their first dental appointment, sit down with your child and explain to them everything they can expect from the visit.
Time of the appointment:
Booking an appointment in the morning, after breakfast and before your young child's nap, can help ensure they are in the best possible mood for their appointment, making it easier for everyone.
Reward:
Promise your children a reward or treat if they are well-behaved during their dental visit. This promise will give them something to look forward to and encourage them to be on their best behaviour.
Educational Videos and books:
Show your children educational videos of dental clinics, and picture books to help them prepare for what to expect.
- Peppa Pig (A Trip to the Dentist)
- SpongeBob SquarePants (The Whole Tooth)
- The Tooth Book by Dr. Seuss
- The Berenstain Bears Visit the Dentist by Stan and Jan Berenstain
- Going to the Dentist by Anna Civardi
Play dentist:
Use a doll or soft toy to play 'dentist' with your children. Use a mirror and a toothbrush to demonstrate proper brushing and dental care.
Call ahead before you come in:
It's a good idea to call Tulip Smile ahead of time to ensure your dentist is running on schedule. Long waiting times can make your child more anxious.
Distraction:
Bring your child's favourite toy along for a distraction during the appointment and as something they can hold for comfort.
